As we do our new HVAC installations and HVAC upgrades, we often recommend homeowners install a two-stage or multi-stage system for residential heating and cooling.
Traditional single-stage HVAC systems operate as on or off and in general, so indoor air temperatures fluctuate more than with a modern two-stage system. Multi-stage HVAC equipment (two stages or more) switches between low and high stage operation depending on conditions.
Two-stage HVAC systems have a low setting and a high setting. They run much of the time on the low setting and switch to the high setting as needed. The low stage (used for moderate temperatures) usually operates at between 60% and 70% of full capacity and the high stage (for hotter or colder days) runs at full 100% output. The result is more consistent heating and cooling with improved unit and energy efficiency.
We install Carrier’s two-stage heat pumps, furnaces, and air conditioning systems. While multi-stage units have a higher initial cost, they can be a worthwhile long-term investment thanks to improved comfort and lower energy bills.
Many two-stage systems include variable speed blower fans. These kick up energy efficiency a notch by matching airflow to comfort demands in real time. These units have “smart” electronics that monitor conditions and automatically select the best stage for comfort and efficiency. Variable speed heat pumps and central air conditioners with Greenspeed Intelligence can adjust their speed and output to match the cooling demands of your home, with the ability to adjust down to 1% increments, delivering precise temperature control.
Call our office at 973.237.0505 or email info@bloomfieldcooling.com to set up a consultation about multi-stage HVAC equipment. Our representative will measure your space to determine which model and size of furnace or air conditioner (or heat pump) will work best for your heating and cooling needs.
And don’t forget to schedule your fall routine maintenance before the temperatures drop and your heating system is called into regular service!
