Get Ready for Air Conditioning Season

At Bloomfield Cooling, Heating & Electric, we’re big fans of proactive maintenance for your HVAC system. Although it’s still chilly in North Jersey, air conditioning season will be here before you know it—so be prepared!

What to expect during routine spring maintenance

Your Bloomfield Cooling, Heating & Electric technician will conduct a thorough check of your system. Routine HVAC maintenance for an air conditioner includes inspecting and cleaning the system, changing filters, checking refrigerant levels, and ensuring proper electrical connections, all to ensure efficient and safe operation. Expect your technician to:

  • Visually inspect the units to look for obvious signs of leaks, damage, or loose connections.
  • Clean or replace air filters as needed.
  • Inspect condensate drain to make sure it’s clear (no clogs to cause moisture backups).
  • Tighten electrical connections to prevent malfunctions.
  • Verify refrigerant levels to ensure they are within the proper range for a smooth cooling season. The technician will alert you and address any detected leaks.
  • Check your thermostat settings to ensure your deice is correctly calibrated and working as expected.
  • Clean the evaporator and condenser coils for best efficiency (we hope you are keeping the outdoor unit free and clear of debris year ’round for optimal operation).
  • Assess the condition of the system’s fan blades and motor.
  • Do a full system operation assessment to make sure it starts, runs, and shuts off correctly.

Your technician will discuss any problems that are uncovered during the maintenance call and inform you of any necessary repair work or parts to be replaced, along with the associated costs. If you are a Comfort Club member, you will have discounts on repairs and equipment warranties as part of your membership.

Signs of a faulty air conditioning system

If you have not had a routine maintenance visit and you are running your central air conditioner this spring, beware of these signs of a faulty system.

  1. The central air conditioning unit makes excessive noise when starting, shutting down or running.
  2. The unit runs in short cycles (turns on and off frequently). Long run times are best for systems and are the most efficient.
  3. The A/C fails to maintain temperature on average temperatures day (we are not talking about excessive heat waves with temperatures regularly higher than 95 degrees). NOTE: Systems in the Northeast are designed to maintain a 20-degree difference between outside and inside temperatures.
  4. Poor airflow develops (inconsistent airflow between rooms).
  5. Ice forms on the lines outside, which may be due to inadequate airflow from clogged air filters or obstructed air ducts.
  6. Water is draining from a different area over the gutter, which may be from clogged filters or issues with ductwork insulation (which can lead to problems with the condensate pipe or pump).

Contact our office for a service call if you detect any of these issues so our techs can diagnose and correct the problem.
