Whole Home Air Purifiers Kill Coronaviruses, Improve Indoor Air Quality

Here’s the exciting and very timely news, according to a press release from the manufacturer: Carrier’s Infinity® Air Purifier has been proven to inactivate 99% of coronavirus and other select captured viruses and bacteria trapped in the filter, through testing at the University of Colorado Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering. The unit’s Captures & Kills® technology also kills influenza and common cold viruses, as concluded by other third-party testing.

The Infinity air purifier works as part of a home’s HVAC system; it uses a filter and electrical charges to inactivate various pathogens, pollen, animal dander and other contaminants, delivering improved indoor air quality. This is especially important as people spend more time at home in general; with cold weather coming and windows likely to be closed (and hence, less fresh air circulating through the home), the unit’s technology creates a healthier, safer indoor environment.

How the whole home air purifier kills harmful viruses
The unit uses a three-way process that first creates a cloud of electrically charged ions; these attach themselves to the airborne particles that flow through the heating and air conditioning system. Those ionized particles are then captured in an oppositely charged filter at an extremely high rate. Those captured microbes remain on the filter where they are subjected to an intense electric field—zapped into inactivity instead of being recirculated into the home.

About the testing
The University of Colorado’s testing was conducted with a murine coronavirus that is closely related to the human coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (which causes COVID-19), and which allowed testing to be completed safely. Test results showed greater than 99% inactivation; therefore, according to Carrier, the Infinity air purifier can be expected to be effective against SARS-CoV-2 when used according to instructions.
