Upgrading Your HVAC System: Benefits You Should Not Miss

As we move out of winter into the spring maintenance season, our customers will be thinking about scheduling their routine maintenance appointments. For many North Jersey homeowners, they will be opening their windows within weeks, and air conditioning will soon be on their minds. For some households, it may be time to think about upgrading the HVAC system.

Why upgrade your HVAC system
Your HVAC system is made up of both heating and air conditioning units; these can be installed at the same time or replaced at different intervals, depending on their age or repair issues.

There are many good reasons why it may be time to replace your HVAC system. Regarding your central air conditioner, some signs are that it’s over 10 years old, requires frequent repairs, rising energy bills, a noisy system, difficulty balancing the temperature between rooms; and humidity issues.

Age matters a lot
Even if your air conditioning unit seems to be running well, age is definitely an issue. For one thing, newer systems are more energy efficient, which will save you money on utility bills over time while keeping your indoor air temperature more comfortable.

Another issue is that older air conditioners used Freon (R-22) and other refrigerants that were banned in 2015 by the EPA. These products, which contain bromine and chlorine, were phased out entirely in 2020 because they the EPA deemed them to be hazardous to the environment by causing ozone depletion. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly difficult for homeowners with older systems to have their units serviced in the event they require Freon for some reason. And at this point, a total air conditioning breakdown will mean replacement, as retrofitting an older system with the new refrigerant is not possible for all makes and models.

At Bloomfield Cooling, Heating & Electric, Inc., we switched to a refrigerant called R-410A back in 1995 when it was first introduced, because it is much more environmentally friendly. Unlike R-22, 410A does not contain bromine or chlorine and it enables higher SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) ratings. That means it reduces power consumption which in turn reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
