Don’t Let Allergy Season Get the Better of You

Air Filtration and Purification Improve Indoor Air Quality and Relieve Allergy Symptoms

Air Filtration - Bloomfield Cooling, Heating & Electric

Spring is notoriously tough for seasonal allergy sufferers in North Jersey. Between all the flowering plants, budding trees, and cut grass, there are a lot of airborne allergens floating around. Add to those dust and pet dander that causes allergic reactions in many people, or the mold and mildew that lurks in damp spaces and causes respiratory issues. For other family members, it may be volatile organic compounds that cause bad reactions.

Although you can’t control what’s floating around outdoors, you can improve your indoor air quality with air filtration and air purification solutions. At Bloomfield Cooling, Heating & Electric, we recommend the following ways to combat allergies indoors, in your home or office.

Air filters and air purifiers for home or office

  • HEPA media filters – HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. HEPA media filters are made of interwoven fiberglass that creates a web. The filter traps air particulates and pollutants—those microscopic particles we can’t see (and tiny ones like dust that we can).

We install these filters on HVAC systems to filter out airborne allergens and pathogens (such as viruses and bacteria) from the air that passes through your central air conditioning system or furnace. You may own a vacuum with a HEPA filter inside which might help trap allergens in the moment; however, installing a HEPA media filter on your HVAC system ensures that as all your indoor air circulates through it, those nasty particulates stay on the filter and not in air.

Many HEPA media filters can be washed and reused. As part of your routine spring maintenance, your Bloomfield Cooling, Heating & Electric technician will check the condition of your system’s filters and either clean them or recommend replacement if necessary.

NOTE OF CAUTION: Be aware that some of the 1″ media filters you buy at hardware or home improvement stores are not what you need; they restrict air flow, which causes problems in terms of HVAC performance and efficiency (and can lead to a costly repair). The best way to go is to have a certified HVAC contractor come to your home or office to size and install a proper HEPA air filter.

  • Air purifiers – at Bloomfield Cooling, Heating & Electric, we install highly effective air purifiers.
    • iWave – The iWave is installed in the HVAC ductwork. In addition to your home, it works well in small commercial spaces like offices, restaurants, and stores. iWave uses a proprietary ionization technology that is proven to inactivate SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). The device’s ion generators remove the hydrogen molecules in airborne pathogens, which causes the toxins to die. With allergens such as pollen and dust, the ions attach to them, causing them to band together into large enough particles for your ventilation system’s air filter to capture. The result: cleaner indoor air that’s also pathogen-free. The iWave is self-cleaning with no replacement parts so once it’s maintenance-free once it’s installed.
    • REME HALO – This in-duct air purifier elevates the quality of your indoor air by purifying every cubic inch of air that your central air conditioning system reaches in your home. It produces ionized hydrogen peroxide molecules that break down contaminants upon contact, to eliminate odors, allergens, and “sick building syndrome” caused by air particulates, microbes, and gases. The REME HALO proactively sweeps through your home to eliminate odors from cooking, dirty laundry, smelly pets, musty rooms, and mildew-ridden basements and attics.
    • Whole-home air purifiers – These high-performances devices filter, capture, and kill airborne mold spores and other toxins with an electrical charge, down to .01 microns. Like iWave, these premium air filtration solutions have been proven to inactivate 99% of coronavirus and other select captured viruses and bacteria trapped in the filter. These high-performance air purifiers are installed as part of your home’s central heating and cooling units and have removable filtration media that are replaced once or twice a year.

Set your fan to help boost air purification

If your HVAC system is equipped with a good digital programmable thermostat, program it to have the fan circulate the air 24/7 or for specific periods of time. This will pull the air through the air filtration or air purification device … and you’ll breathe fresher, cleaner air.
